Church History
Harvest Baptist was established on January 1, 1984 in Edinburg, Texas. Prior to the church being established the founders Ray and Gracie Higginbotham, along with the help of Duane and Marilyn Gibson, laid the groundwork by canvassing the Edinburg area and holding services in the Higginbotham's home. On March 10th a tent was placed on Bond and Bond Auctioneer's property (corner of Freddy Gonzalez Dr and McColl road) to continue the church services. The first baptism was on April 1st. On April 26th the church started meeting in Pete Bond's trailer which was his office at that time. In May, the first small building was purchased from a small putt-putt golf course and moved onto the property.
In August of 1984, Frank Hayword was called to be the Pastor and services continued in the trailer offices until June of 1985. Under Pastor Hayword's leadership the church grew and purchased a mobile home to be used for Sunday School classrooms and church fellowships. The work continued to grow and after 5 years the Lord opened the doors for the church to purchase the 2 acres of land for the initial building and mobile home were already placed. Then came the building permit and construction started on a new auditorium and classrooms in September of 1989. The Lord not only provided for the completion of the building but also for
the furnishings.
In August of 1994, the church called Dale Yontz to be their pastor. It was in December of 1996 that an office building with classrooms were added to the existing building. The parking lot was paved in August 1997. Praise the Lord, in April of 1999 God provided the money needed for Harvest Baptist church to become debt free. As the church continued to grow the construction of a 5,850 square foot addition began in June 2000. Now there is a large fellowship hall, nurseries, additional
restrooms and classrooms.
